Hanna Ljungberg was no doubt what former Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg was to the Swedish Women’s national team during her time with the Scandinavian country for her impeccable goal-scoring ability and leadership skills.

Ljungberg was an integral part of the Umea team that reached five Champions League finals in the space of seven-year and won it twice during that time.

In the 2002-03 campaign, she was excellently lethal in front of goal with 10 goals that season and went on to top the competition’s goal chart for a decade despite her career being constantly disrupted and unfortunately ended by an ACL injury.

Had injury not been a pain on Ljungberg’s neck, perhaps she could still be leading the goal chart as the all-time scorer in UEFA Women’s Champions League, however despite retiring at the age of 30 she still ranks comfortably among the best in the game.

  • Kim Little – (OL Reign, 40)

The remarkable Scottish midfielder had a brilliant stint with Hibernian and notably Arsenal across her two spells with the Lady Gunners.

Little claimed her top spots with a goal via penalties for the Gunners in 2021-22 round two legs against Czech Republic outfit Slavia Praha and German side Hoffenheim in the group stage recording her 40 total goals in the Champions League.

She now plays her football with OL Reign after leaving Arsenal on loan, perhaps if she returns to the team she might add to her tally in the Champions League but as it stands she’s still placed 9th on the table with 40 goals.

  • Nina Burger – (Retired, 40)

Nina Burger took the Champions League by storm in the 2014-15 campaign as she became the first player to score 40 goals for one team following her return to Neulengbach from Houston Dash in the USA.

As brilliant as Burger was in front of goal, she couldn’t help her Austrian club conjure magic in the Champions League to progress beyond the round of 16. However, she made her presence felt at the club by paying the fans back with a lot of goals both in the league and Europe.

Following her retirement in 2019 at Sand in the German Frauen-Bundesliga, she won quite a number of individual awards which inked her name in the folklore of the game as one of the best women footballers ever to play the game.

Olympique Lyonnais feminine legend and Sweden’s all-time goal-scorer Schelin could be said to be the Cristiano Ronaldo of women’s football because of her hunger and ability to latch the ball at the back of the net.

The former Lyon star scored 225 goals in 225 appearances for the French and Europe champions during her stint before she moved to her native country to play with Rosengard where she also registered her name on the goal chart during the 2016-17 champions league final against Wolfsburg.

  • Camille Abily – (Retired, 43)

Camille Abily is no doubt one of the best midfielders in women’s football with a total goal record of 43 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League during her time with Montpellier and Lyon.

She was the joint top scorer in the 2011-12 campaign alongside Le Sommer with nine goals, before she bid farewell to the game following Lyon’s loss to Wolfsburg in the 2018 final having had a successful stint with Lyon.

Abily also had a brilliant spell with Montpellier when she helped them reach the 2005-06 semi-finals against all odds displaying one of her best performances in the color of the French outfit that season.

  • Marta – (Orlando Pride, 46)

Brazilian icon and female Pele as she’s often called is arguably the best female footballer ever to play the game. Marta burst onto the champions league scene at Umea at the age of 18 and went on to take the competition by the scruff of the neck scoring against Frankfurt in the final.

One unique thing about Marta’s 46 goals in the Champions League came on the back of playing half of her club football career outside of Europe. Had it been Umea won all of the finals they got to while the Brazilian was there, she could have been the only Brazilian with five European trophies in her cabinet.

  • Eugenie Le Sommer – (Lyon, 47)

One of Lyon’s integral members that dominated European football for the last decade, winning the champions league seven times in ten years also makes the list.

To say Le Sommer is one of Lyon’s Feminine legends is literally an understatement for what she’s been able to achieve with the club having joined them from Stade Briochin in 2010.

The versatile attacking midfielder has been part of Lyon’s eight champions league triumphs and scored in three finals in 2012, 2018, and 2020. Le Sommer equaled and surpassed the record of Marta in the 2020 final against Wolfsburg before she moved to OL Reign on loan but is now back at Lyon.

  • Conny Pohlers – (Retired, 48)

10 All Time Goal-scorers In Women's Champions League

Pohlers is arguably one of Germany’s best female footballers to play the game. En route to Turbine Potsdam winning the champions league in the 2004-05 campaign, she scored a record of 14 goals in the competition that stood as a Women’s Champions League goal-scoring record for 13 years in a single season.

She didn’t only win the trophy with Potsdam, she also won it with Frankfurt in 2008 and two more with Wolfsburg in her last two playing campaigns for the most successful German side in the competition.

Pohlers’ tally of 48 goals took her just 45 appearances to achieve, and with such a great feat she remains one of Germany best to play in the UEFA champions league.

  • Anja Mittag – (Retired, 51)

10 All Time Goal-scorers In Women's Champions League

It only took the world cup winner 68 games to become the first player in the Champions League history to net 50 goals in the competition when she scored for Rosengard in the 2018-19 season.

Mittag is a two-time champions league winner with Turbine Potsdam before she bid farewell to the game in May 2019 to focus on her coaching career having enjoyed a successful career both on the club and international stage.

  • Ada Hegerberg – (Lyon, 59)

10 All Time Goal-scorers In Women's Champions League

Six times champions league winner with Lyon is undoubtedly on the verge of rewriting the Women’s Champions League record folklore with her goals in the competition just like Ronaldo and Messi have done in the men’s competition with a huge number of goals.

The Ballon D’or winner needed just 50 games to break former German star Anja Mittag’s record in the competition, while her tally of 15 goals in a single season still remains the competition’s goal-scoring record.

With Hegerberg still in her twenties and playing for one of Europe’s best team, she’s obviously on the right track to increase her tally in the champions league.
