It was a thrilling encounter at Akure Township Stadium as Winifred Eyebhokia’s strike gave the Owena Mermaids a 1-0 win over FC Robo Queens.
Winifred Eyebhokia put a makor scrath in FC Robo’s hopes of Super Four qualification by scoring the definitive goal in a precious win for Sunshine Queens, who survived a late cling to stick on for the win in Wednesday’s Nigeria Women Premier League game.
The home side was on course for a goalless draw that would have done FC Robo Queens few favours but Eyebhokia’s strike from the penalty spot settled scores at the Akure Township Stadium.
The silly error cost the visitors a penalty in the 74 minute as Mercy Joseph handled the ball in the 18-yard box, with goalkeeper Damilola Amofe failing to stop the resulting kick. Fehintola Mabokanje and skipper Rasheedat Ajibade saw their odds go begging in the early minutes of the game, and their profligacy eventually proved costly.
In spite of the 1-0 loss, FC Robo would be hoping to ricochet back with a home win against Abia Angels in their next NWPL game at the Fifa Goal Project ground of the National Stadium on June 28, 2017.
