Rivers Angels suffered their first defeat of the 2016/17 Nigeria Women Football League season at the hands of South South rivals Bayelsa Queens in a Matchday 8 encounter decided at the Nembe City Stadium on Thursday.
Bayelsa Queens Captain, Joy Bokiri, first startled the visitors with an opening goal inside the first minute of action after taking advantage of a defensive error by Rivers Angels’ Gladys Akpa. The goal is Bokiri’s fourth of the current campaign and the fastest goal of the season.
Eight minutes into the second half, Osarenoma Igbinovia opened her goals account for the season to make it 2-0 in favour of the hosts.
Cecilia Nku would go on to pull one back for the Jewel of Rivers from a freekick just outside the 18 yard box but it was not enough to extend their six-match unbeaten run.
Bayelsa Queens are now atop group A with 13 points while Rivers Angels occupy second place with 12 points. In third place are FC Robo Queens with 11 points.
In the other match played on Thursday, Stella Nwadike’s lone goal was all Adamawa Queens needed to pick all three points at home against Confluence Queens.
