As the 2016/2017 of the Nigeria Professional Football League got underway yesterday between Kano pillars and FC Ifeanyi Ubah, the match was abandoned in the 60th minute due to poor officiating from the referee who is reported to be Mrs Folusho Ajayi. An awful way to open the campaign with negativity.
The fracas started when Ifeanyi Ubah’s winger Prince Aggrey Ex-Kano Pillar’s player scored a free-kick second away before the end of first-half but the Referee instead of awarding the goal signalled for halftime ignoring the linesman call for a goal.
“This is a disgrace,” lamented Pillars coach Kadiri Ikhana. “But we must commend the Kano fans that they did not allow hell to break loose as a result of Ifeanyi Ubah abandoning this game.”
However, football fans and media house have been seeking why the opening match of the season was handed by a female since the organisers know the game will be filled with tension. Does female referee have enough experience to officiate a match of that magnitude at home to Kano Pillars’s notorious Sani Abacha stadium
Having a female referee officiating the start of the League was a welcome development as it signalled a change, but most European clubs would never want to kick start a new campaign with such fracas.
Referees getting ready for a game
Discipline is far from the league players if not FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s players shouldn’t have abandoned the game and continue the game no matter how the officiating goes, which suggest they don’t respect the opposite gender handling the match.
Despite the huge presence of Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) Shehu Dikko and other League executives at the game. The players find solace in ignoring their presence and abandoned the match, a huge slap to LMC and other League committee’s face
LMC should take a big step in penalising FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s player for abandoning a match in play, which will signal a warning to other clubs who may try such act in the future.
Could it be the League management hasn’t got it right in choosing a referee to handle such big game or was it just a conspired act?
Meanwhile, NPFL supporters took to Twitter to share their views on the poor start of the season which was marred by poor officiating.
