MFM FC shot to the highest point of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) log as they squashed Rivers United 2-1 courtesy of Stephen Odey brace in a rescheduled Matchday 8 fixture at the Agege Stadium on Wednesday, CheapGoals.com reports.
The Olukoya Boys got the early lead in the 29th minutes, thanks to Odey’s penalty after Rivers United skipper fouled Sikiru Olatunbosun in the 18-yard box. Odey ventured up and sent Rivers goalkeeper Rotimi Sunday the wrong path for his eleventh goal of the season.
The visitors reacted under five minutes after a counter attack assault from Oveke Bernard and Lukman Mohammed saw Christian Weli beat MFM sloppy defence and smash the ball home in the 33rd minute.
Meanwhile, Shola Brossa ought to have put MFM FC back on track after Weli’s leveller but, a sharp reflex save by Sunday Rotimi denied the midfielder his first goal of the season.
As the game was close to the finish of first half, MFM was granted another penalty after an unnecessary two-foot challenge by Asekunowo Abayomi got Shola inside the box. NPFL top scorer Odey then put the ball past Rotimi to expand his season goal count to 12 in 11 games.
MFM FC now has 27 points from 14 games, the Olukoya Boys now charge the top spot of the NPFL with 27points and 2 points off Plateau United who are second with 25points.
