Messi Speaks Highly Of Egypt After Visit

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has showered praises on the African Country of Egypt after he visited the capital city Cairo on Tuesday to be a part of a health campaign.

Messi, who has won the World Player of the Year accolade on a record-breaking five occasions, was invited to Cairo to be a part of a health campaign put together by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Tourism and aimed at encouraging Hepatitis C patients to undergo treatment in the country.

While speaking with news outlet ONE as monitored by popular Egyptian media outlet KingFut.com, Messi spoke about the greatness of Egypt and its ancient history. He further revealed that he would love to try the Egyptian food during his short stay.

“It’s great to be at the Pyramids. It was a great moment when I entered the Pyramid and touched its stones,” Messi told ONE, as quoted by KingFut.

“I have touched Egypt’s greatness and knew how the ancients have lived, it’s a brilliant moment to watch the history closely. In school, I learned about Egypt and I know how great it is.

“The visit was fast so I can’t talk about Cairo, but I know it has a great history. I wish to know it better someday.”

The visit represents the second time Argentine national team skipper Lionel Messi would be visiting the ancient country having first travelled to Egypt with his Barcelona teammates almost a decade ago. Messi and his colleagues were guests of the local team and seven-time African champions Al Ahly in an international club friendly match in 2007 with the Spanish champions running out 4-0 winners.

Speaking in an interview with Egyptian television presenter Amr Adeeb, Messi revealed that he loved visiting the country and viewing the inside of the pyramids.

“I used to read about the pyramids in school and it was a great experience to view it up close for the first time. It’s one of the best things I’ve done yet,” Messi told Adeeb.

Adeeb further asked the Argentine international if he had  tried the popular Egyptian dish ‘Mulukhiyah‘ (a plant-based dish served either on its own or with meat), Messi replied that he would try it before Amr Adeeb jokingly cut him short and said, “if you do, you have to retire as it’ll finish your career as a footballer”.
