Premier League table topper Manchester City have been enthusiastic about a new centre-back for quite a while and set their sights on Atletico Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte this week subsequent to giving up on Jonny Evans.
Pep Guardiola’s side is believed to have consented to pay Laporte’s £57m release clause, with the 23-year-old set to sign a five-year deal at the Etihad next week.
The France U21 international is expected to undergo a medical session with City in the coming days before putting pen to paper on the deal that will see him overshadow Kevin De Bruyne as City’s most expensive player ever.
Laporte was let out of Athletic Bilbao 1-1 draw with Eibar on Friday night, as the transfer drew nearer to fruition, with the deal apparently now just a matter of time.
The Cityzens needs another centre-back with Guardiola unwilling to depend excessively on the injury-prone Vincent Kompany and the unconvincing Eliaquim Mangala.
