FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi received his fifth Golden Shoe award on Tuesday, recognising his goalscoring exploits from last season. The Argentine, who has won the golden shoe award more times than any other player in history, scored 34 goals in 36 games in LaLiga in 2017/18.
The gala event, held at the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona, was attended by club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the club sporting director Silvio Elías and Xavier Vilajoana, and in addition Pep Segura, Éric Abidal, Guillermo Amor, Ramon Planes, Jordi Roura, Aureli Altimira and Messi’s teammates Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto.
Lionel Messi has said that he never thought it was conceivable to be so successful in his Barcelona career in the wake of winning the European Golden Shoe for a record fifth time.
Regardless of being overlooked for the 2018 Ballon d’Or, Messi has enjoyed another superb campaign, having helped the Catalan giant to another La Liga title in 2017-18 season.
“I did not expect this when I started,” Messi said at the event.
“My professional dream was to be able to succeed in football, I never imagined this.
“I enjoy my work, the effort and, above all, the team-mates. I’m in the best team in the world, I have the best team-mates in the world in their positions and that makes everything easier getting these awards.
“Thanks to God I feel very good physically and emotionally.
The years go by and I try to take care of myself, as I have done my whole career, and more, because the games are increasingly demanding.”
While it is his fifth overall, it’s the third year in a row he is taking home the gilded boot. Here are his LaLiga goal totals for each year he has won it:
2009/10 — 34 goals
2011/12 — 50 goals
2012/13 — 46 goals
2016/17 — 37 goals
2017/18 — 34 goals
Messi currently leads Europe in scoring once again, with 14 goals, and is quickly moving up the Golden Shoe points ranking.
