Lionel Messi’s Barcelona future has everybody talking. It’s emerged that the No.10 could leave next summer due to a clause that allows him to call time on his Camp Nou days.
After ‘El Pais‘ leaked the news that the Argentine international had a clause stipulating that he could leave the club in the summer he wanted, ‘Marca’ reports that the number 10’s contract runs.
Mundo Deportivo had previously published that the player could leave Camp Nou whenever he wanted to play in a minor league, as Xavi and Andrea Iniesta did by moving to Qatar and Japan, respectively. But talk of a minor league has ended, while Messi could still leave in June.
However, the situation has a very important nuance. Messi‘s renewal is until 2020, but with an optional renewal until 2021. As it stands, there’s nothing until 2022 and the player will be free to discuss with any club from next January 1.
The Argentinian had wanted to wait to see how he felt at the end of this season in order to freely decide his future. Now, he’s thinking things over but is in no rush to decide his future.
As this goes on, the club are aware of the situation and want to extend his contract again. They know that if they renew it before January they can avoid other clubs coming in with dizzying offers.
But Barca chiefs are already pushing for Messi to extend his stay at the Camp Nou.
Speaking back in February, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed the decision is all on Messi to renew with his stance clear.
”Messi’s contract is up in two years but, given how he is playing, we will have him for many more years,” Bartomeu said.
“Leo is intelligent, he knows how to measure things. If he feels good, he will tell us.
“When he decides, we will renew his deal. Messi is the best player in history.”
For the time being, given what has been happening in recent seasons and the fact Leo is happy in Barcelona, it does not seem like the Argentine could be thinking about leaving. That said, there is a major concern at Barcelona because it would not be unusual for the Argentinian star to receive a multi-million-pound offer from clubs after the turn of the year.
