Antelopes are known to be fast on the ground with spring-like limbs used to cover a long distance in a short period. However, in the midst of Elephants, Lions and Tornadoes threatening the route to Glory, the Antelopes albeit started the race slowly, but have flown in a manner only similar to the Eagles covering all sorts of stars in clouds of dust as they glide in lofty heights
In this case, the Flyings Antelopes of Enugu also known as Rangers International have continued to show consistency this season which has seen them sit atop Group A of the abridged 2019 NPFL season with 4 points clear of the second place and yet having 2 games in hand to play.
Just like an individual given a lifeline or second chance at something, the Enugu based team who finished tenth in the abandoned 2017/2018 league season, way behind the CAF competitions places, qualified for the CAF Confederations cup through the Aiteo Cup showing resilience and strong character especially in the final match against Kano Pillars in Asaba, coming from a 3-0 deficit to win on penalties.
Despite having to navigate through the preliminary stages of the CAF Confederations cup to get into the group stages, Rangers went 7 games into the CAF Confederations cup campaign unbeaten playing beautiful football and tactics which their manager Gbenga Ogunbote is known for before a header loss to Etoile du Sahel and a home loss to CS Sfaxien which ended their Continental campaign.
Amidst of all this, Rangers have kept their NPFL on track losing only once since the start of the season, a 1-0 loss to MFM in Lagos the only blot in their impressive run which has seen them win 2 of their last three away games going a total of 9 games unbeaten in all competitions.
While Lobi Stars have found it difficult to balance the performance between Champions League football and the League, sitting at a respectable 4th position, Enugu Rangers through the exploits of Goodwin Aguda, Bright Silas, Michael Uchebo, Rangers have managed to make a smooth transition and maintain their early season form.
With sevens games left to be played in the regular season, it is to be seen if the Cathedral Landlords will keep up with the same momentum going into the super 6 playoffs but should they do so and with Akwa United, El Kanemi Warriors and FC Ifeanyi Ubah lurking in group B, they look like the biggest contender for the 2019 NPFL title alongside Akwa United and a worthy representative of Nigeria in CAF competitions and who knows they may be 2nd time lucky to bring home a Continental trophy.
