Chelsea are willing to trigger Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak‘s £89m release clause within the next 24 hours after Thibaut Courtois failed to report back to training on Monday.
The Belgian shot-stopper did not turn up for a pre-season training session on Monday in spite of being expected to resume training by Chelsea coaching staff, with it presently seeming inescapable that he will proceed onward for a move away from Stamford Bridge. Thibaut Courtois told Maurizio Sarri on Monday he wanted to leave the club and asked the manager to sanction his transfer to Real Madrid.
Courtois is known to be enthusiastic about a move to Real Madrid this summer for personal reasons and he currently seems to have demonstrated that he is glad to attempt and force through a move if needs be.
With the West London club at long last dealing with the fact that Courtois may leave for Madrid this summer, attention has swung to finding a substitution and while the English press believe the best replacement is Stoke City’s Jack Butland, in Spain it is much expected that Oblak will be the man given the obligation of filling Courtois’ somewhat vacant gloves.
The Slovenian is widely considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and it comes with a price tag that confirms that fact.
However, a sum of £89m would see Chelsea lure him away from the Wanda Metropolitano, which means the Blues face paying the price for missing out on Alisson, Pepe Reina and Jordan Pickford.
