Rivers United crushed sloppy Shooting Stars 1-0 in a matchday 26 of the Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) encounter played at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Saturday.
Rivers United thought had led the pack just barely 2 minutes of play when Odumegwu smashed home from an offside position. With the linesman Felicia Obile raising the flag for official Ephraim Iyorhe to chalk off the Odumegwu’s strike.
John Odumegwu strike gives the home side an early lead in the 21st minute when he bundled home a headed effort from Bolaji Sakin cross from two yards. The goal was Odumegwu’s’ first league goal for the Pride of Rivers since he joined from Plateau United amid the mid-season transfer window.
After fifteen minutes, Shooting Stars missed a chance to draw level. Ayobami Junior dribbled his way past Atuloma before his right-footed shot was saved by Femi Thomas.
The second half saw a shortage of goals attempts but was notable because of Rivers United’s loss of midfielder Emeka Atuloma. Atuloma faces a race against time to be fit for next weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup game against FUS Rabat in Port Harcourt.
Today’s victory sees Rivers United move to the 13th position of the NPFL log with 33 points while Shooting Stars stay stiff in 18th and battling with relegation with 29 points having played one game more.
