Ex- Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen, will lead a select group of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) U-17 team to South Africa to partake in a 7-day football tourney.
The team is comprised of 20 players chosen from various NPFL youth academies such as Remo Stars, Kano Pillars, Nasarawa United, Wikki Tourists, FC IfeanyiUbah, Gombe United, and Shooting Stars.
He will be assisted by former National U-13 coach, Danladi Nasidi, and Emeka Amadi as the goalkeepers’ coach.
According to npfl.ng Equavoen expressed his delight in being part of the team:
“I must commend the LMC for this vision and also the organisers of the Future Champions group,
“This will benefit the league in the future but it’s disappointing that top teams like Enyimba, Rangers, Rivers United don’t have young players on their rosters. The idea behind this is to force these teams to have youth teams.
“From what we’ve seen so far in the training we’ve had, it’s clear to us that we have a talented team and the future for these players is bright. The main objective is to expose these boys and help project their careers.”
The selected group have played two friendly games, winning 6-0 against Dante Stars FC of Abuja on Tuesday, and 8-0 against Royal Academy on Wednesday, and will also play just one more game before leaving for Johannesburg on Saturday, March 18, 2017.
The teams that would partake in the Future Champions football competition consists of defending champions Atletico Madrid. Shanghai Shenhua, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester United, and Everton.
The tourney will hold between March 20-27 in Gauteng, South Africa
